Richard Szasz visited a factory in China to make furniture for a student housing project in Waterloo when he decided to visit Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
The smoke of a lot of coal is very strong.
It ignited the power plant, blurred the buildings in the historical space, and stimulated his eyes, nose and throat.
Szasz traveled with a friend, Peter Whitby, who was shocked by air pollution.
Whitby has never been to China. he has been following him.
"Every picture we take is blurry and we can't see any government building clearly," Szasz said . ".
"You can feel the itch in your throat, you can feel the blockage, and when I have my blew nose, something black comes out," he said . ".
"This is very shocking.
"Around them they see people wearing thin paper masks.
Szasz, it's an incredible job.
The installation of paper masks provides great protection.
"I said, 'Why didn't anyone make something more fashionable, something that really worked?
People live like this every day.
Why does no one come up with a better design, a better product?
"This is just a comment he threw.
But Whitby thinks it's a good idea for a new company.
Obviously, a huge market is needed here.
In July 2014, a few months after Whitby returned to the Waterloo area, the idea was presented to Szasz, which was established by O2 Canada.
Whitby became CEO and Szasz served as Chief Innovation Officer.
Whitby and Szasz are not traditional technology entrepreneurs.
They have no engineering or software background.
Nine years ago, when they worked at the same site, they met.
Later, Szasz established Atlas Property Group, a company that manages student housing.
Before the establishment of O2, Whitby has been committed to sales momentum.
O2 runs in the accelerator center of Waterloo, retaining the SnapPea design to help with the prototype.
Their masks and filters were tested at the Air Pollution Laboratory at the University of Waterloo.
After about 20 different versions have been built, O2 has one with a high

This makes the o2 mask different and more efficient than any other mask on the market, Szasz said.
"This is the big key to any mask, the seal on your face," he said . ".
"It doesn't matter how efficient the filter is, it won't work if the air goes around the filter.
So we started to focus on this.
"The filter has a static charge that helps attract and capture very small particles.
"It holds the charge until the filter is covered with particles," Szasz said . ".
"This is our secret sauce.
"After the user purchases the mask, he can take out the subscription every month and receive the new filter by mail.
The filter has different colors.
Whitby and Szasz want filters that capture particles as small as 2. 5 micrometres.
Human hair is less than 10 microns in diameter. At 2.
5 microns, particles are very light, they float in the air for a long time, increasing the exposure of people.
When inhaled, these particles go deep into the lungs.
According to the test of UW, O2 shielding and filter capture 98.
Particle measurements of 6% 2.
There are 5 microns across the street, says Szasz.
"Most of our competitors are below 50," he said . "
Last summer, O2 donated masks and filters to workers fighting wildfires in BC.
The California fire destroyed thousands of homes last month, as was the case.
"We have a lady who wrote us an email saying that she has not left her house for two weeks.
"She put on our mask and did two hours of gardening work in the yard," Szasz said . ".
This is the verification that O2 is looking.
"You can test the mask you want in the lab, but you don't really know until the real person tests the mask," Szasz said . ".
Earlier this month, masks and filters were sold online on three different platforms, including WeChat.
"Instead of building a website in China, we are building a WeChat store," Szasz said . ".
O2 wants to sell in other markets where air pollution poses a threat to human health.
It is also under regulatory approval for sales in North America.
